Mercy over America

“This is what the Sovereign Lord,
the Holy One of Israel, says:
‘Only in returning to Me
and resting in Me will you be saved.
In quietness and confidence is your strength.'”

Isaiah 30

2-3 months ago, I believe the Lord laid it on my heart what He desires to give our nation in this new season.

Like many of my fellow Americans, I had been spending a lot of time in prayer and seeking Him about our country, both with friends/in prayer circles as well as at home with my husband & by myself, crying out for Him to rescue His people and expose corruption on every single level 🙂

The unearthing we — as a nation, as individuals, and globally — experienced in 2020 revealed so much uncomfortable truth, and like many Christians, we hit our knees to intercede & STOP the enemy’s evil agenda by the power of Jesus’ name.

One autumn night–almost as His much-awaited reply to my fervent prayers–I had what I’d call an incredible revelation in the shower. It felt like the Lord was impressing His heart for America onto me, & His message rang so clearly: He desired to extend mercy to the USA!!!

[Enter ‘mind blown’ emoji here]

I can’t describe the incredible SHOCK that coursed through me. Some had been declaring for years, even decades (much of my life), that America was on a path to judgment. Could it be possible that our Lord would give us mercy instead? It seemed too good to be true, an amazing dream!

Though this aligns with Scripture (which I’ll post below), it completely caught me off guard. My instantaneous reply was, BUT LORD–WE DON’T DESERVE MERCY. We deserve the judgment many believers have been speaking over us for so long.

He seemed to reply with overwhelming kindness and joy: That’s the point, My child! No one deserves My mercy!! This is why they sing about ‘amazing grace’. (!!!!)

I was floored. Could our Father’s heart truly be to pardon us, after so much wicked corruption was being exposed at our roots?

I felt our prayers bombarding heaven had reached their tipping point. It reminds me of Queen Esther approaching her husband’s throne, after praying & fasting with her people, not knowing if he would extend his scepter or not–that trepidation and genuine, humbling fear, knowing your fate is in the hands of Another entirely outside yourself, and all you can do is plead for your life!

But that night when God seemed to reply to my many prayers with this revelation of His merciful heart towards us, I experienced a flood of peace, joy and genuine ‘awe’ in His goodness.

America’s failures –> God’s opportunity to show His mercy!

How could the God of the universe overlook our country’s many sins?? Our incredible apathy & lukewarmness. Our obsession with American ‘idols’. Legalized killing of tens of millions of babies. Our greed, lusts and betrayal of each other & Him. The church’s lack of confrontation & thus conviction. Our collective dismissal of His salvation… treating it so lightly, as if it hadn’t changed our lives & world completely. Our failure to share His love with the rest of our country because, like, all Americans know the Gospel & let’s not beat a dead horse shall we? Our cowardice & laziness. Our blatant sins. Our lies, deceit & manipulation. Our love of the world that is anathema to Him.

Many of us either stopped sharing the Gospel or stopped LIVING it. We became so wrapped up in our culture that we looked just like it. The Bible says that to befriend the world is to become God’s enemy…

Had we become such believers? Had we forgotten our first Love?

For sure, yes, many of God’s people had. We’d gotten caught up in the lusts & cares of this world. And the pride! In our family, in our good deeds, even in being American (ironically!) lol. We began thinking, like Nebuchadnezzar, that all these blessings were due to US and OUR hard work–not because of God’s grace over our lives or our country. We began attributing it to our own greatness!

His Word says that God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. And America needed a humbling, didn’t we? Yet here is God’s promise to a rebellious people:

“If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

2 Chronicles 7

There is His promise to us in black & white: Our humble repentance and seeking after Him will heal our land!

Maybe America needed to be brought to her knees through this past year & through this charade of an election to show us ALL how incredible our country’s liberties are, how blessed by God we are, and how vulnerable our nation is–“One generation away” from losing it all.

No, America, it’s not because you are so great or perfect that God wants to redeem you! It’s not because you’ve always been faithful, as this powerful Dutch Sheets video proclaims. Even when we are faithless, He is faithful! He cannot betray Himself, and He made a covenant with many of us. He will always keep His end of the bargain.

God delights to show us mercy!

Hard to believe, I agree. Yet He says it right here in Micah 7:

“Who is a God like You, who pardons wrongdoing and passes over a rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy.”

Micah 7

God is so awesome, so mighty, so merciful!! He DESIRES to extend the scepter of mercy towards us–even if we’re guilty of much–when we humble ourselves and repent.

When many people think of God, they conjure up images of an angry, ruthless Judge waiting with lightning bolts in heaven, eager to punish us & the wicked. But what a beautifully contrasting image Micah 7 gives us, the portrait of a loving Father who not only isn’t eager to punish us but DELIGHTS in giving us what we do not deserve!!!

Let’s remember the depths from which He has saved us, be grateful He did not punish us according to our many sins, and humbly pray for HIS kingdom to come and His will to be done on this earth & in this nation, as it is in heaven.

He is able to forgive us, He desires to, and I believe He said He is going to–because we have repented, prayed, humbled ourselves, and sought Him. I believe His biblical response to our pleas, which He echoed in my spirit that night recently, was that He will save us from the destruction we deserve.

While we don’t know the exact blueprint of His outpouring of mercy on our beautiful nation and what that journey will look like, we must look to His character, as defined in His Word. Scripture says He is the same yesterday, today and forever — & thus our perfect anchor in any storm, especially when we’re experiencing a “famine of truth” such as our country is today! This is the IDEAL time to truly ‘take Him at His word’ and believe HIM to fulfill His good word in our country–because disinformation and lies abound. In times of uncertainty, I am supremely grateful that God is our immovable Rock, our Fortress, and yes–our Deliverer.

America, believe and you will see the salvation and mercy of God. Just believe.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all His benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The LORD works righteousness
and justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the people of Israel.
The LORD is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide,
nor will He keep His anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does He remove our transgressions from us.
As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear Him.”

Psalm 103

“Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?'”

John 11:40

“You were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air… Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Ephesians 2

“The LORD is good to all: and His tender mercies are over all His works.”

Psalm 145

“With the merciful You show Yourself merciful;
with the blameless man You show Yourself blameless;
with the purified You show Yourself pure;
and with the crooked You make Yourself seem tortuous.
For You save a humble people,
but the haughty eyes You bring down.”

Psalm 18

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
